# Ontario's Best Beaches

Freshwater, white sand and wild nature — Ontario's beaches will surprise you

Most people don't think of beaches when they think of Ontario — but they should. With five of the Great Lakes on its borders and over 250,000 lakes across the province, Ontario has some of the finest freshwater beaches in the world. The water is clean, the sand is real, and in summer the temperatures rival the Mediterranean.

## Sandbanks — World Record Dunes

Located two and a half hours east of Toronto, Sandbanks Provincial Park contains the world's largest freshwater dunebars. Some dunes reach 25 metres high and stretch for kilometres along the south shore of Lake Ontario. In July and August, the shallow water warms to 22–24°C — temperatures that would be the envy of many European coastal resorts. The park has three distinct beaches: Outlet Beach for families, Dunes Beach flanked by the towering dunes, and the quieter Sandbanks Beach.

## Georgian Bay — The Sixth Great Lake

Georgian Bay is sometimes called the "sixth Great Lake" for its size and character. Its crystal-clear waters — strikingly turquoise in summer — rocky islands and white sand beaches make it one of Ontario's premier destinations. Killbear Provincial Park near Parry Sound offers sheltered family beaches, while the Bruce Peninsula UNESCO World Heritage Site rewards hikers with hidden coves accessible only on foot.

## Lake Superior — Wilderness Beaches

For those seeking raw nature and vast horizons, Lake Superior's beaches are in a class of their own. At 82,100 km², Superior is the world's largest freshwater lake by surface area. Lake Superior Provincial Park offers kilometres of wild shoreline with astonishingly clear water. Sunsets from Agawa Bay beach count among Ontario's finest natural spectacles — a vast horizon of orange and pink, worthy of the Pacific coast.

## Practical Tips

-   **Best season:** July and August. Great Lakes water reaches 20–24°C depending on the lake.
-   **Booking:** Ontario Parks campsite reservations open 5 months in advance and sell out fast — especially Sandbanks and Killbear.
-   **Water shoes:** Recommended for rocky Georgian Bay beaches.
-   **Safety:** Strong currents and winds on Lake Erie and Lake Superior. Always respect warning flags.
